Cannabis 101
History of cannabis
The use of cannabis as a medicine dates back thousands of years. However, the first discovery of an individual cannabinoid wasn’t until 1940. All these years later, we are just beginning to fully research, understand and appreciate the complexity of this holistic plant. There are over 600 natural chemical compounds found in cannabis, including about 160 cannabinoids. The two most well-known cannabinoids are THC (responsible for psychoactive effects) and CBD (non-psychoactive).
How Well Do You Know Cannabis?
The discovery of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) led to the 1988 discovery for the ECS (Endocannabinoid System). The ECS is found throughout the human body and regulates homeostasis, acting as a connection between mind and body. It regulates immune function, blood sugar, muscle and fat tissues, pain centers, hormones, reward centers and metabolic functions. The cannabinoids in cannabis interact with CB1 and CB2 receptors that make up the ECS.
Cannabis also provides about 400 known terpenes. These naturally occurring chemical compounds are the reason for the distinctive aromas and flavors associated with different strains. While they remain somewhat of a mystery, more and more evidence indicates that the terpene profile works in tandem with the cannabinoid content to create specific effects. Two strains with the same percentage of THC produce unique experiences due to the entirety of the chemical profile.
We Can Help Guide You on your Cannabis Journey
Cannabis products are most often separated into three categories: indica, sativa and hybrid. Indicas are typically associated with relaxing and sedative effects, while sativas are considered energizing and uplifting. Hybrids offer a combination of the parent strains. We at Mana Supply encourage looking beyond the classifications. Consider the entirety of the strains profile, including terpenes and THC to CBD ratio. The more you learn about cannabis, the better equipped you are to make beneficial and confident choices.
